Apple Previews Mac OS X Lion

Besides the launch of the new MacBook Air laptops, Apple today gave a preview of the company’s upcoming Mac OS X “Lion” operating system.

Inspired by iPad’s software, the eighth major release of OS for Mac computers includes the Mac App Store, support for full screen iPad-like apps, Launchpad, a new home for all of Mac apps, and and Mission Control, which “unifies Exposé, Dashboard, Spaces and full screen apps into an innovative new view of everything running on your Mac, and allows you to instantly navigate anywhere.”

Mac OS X Lion will ship next summer, while the Mac App Store will be available for the current Mac OS X “Snow Leopard” within 90 days.

Apple also introduced today a beta version of FaceTime for Mac which allows Mac users to video call iPhone 4 and iPod touch users, as well as iLife ’11 with major upgrades to iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand applications.

Dell XPS 15 Overview

Dell today officially launched the new XPS entertainment laptop lineup, including the 15.6-inch Dell XPS 15.

As same as the XPS 14 and 17, the XPS 15 provides a choice of Intel’s Core i5 and i7 processors and Nvidia’s Optimus switchable graphics technology, which saves battery life. It comes with the dual core i5-460M or i5-560M, or with quad core i7-740QM or i7-840QM. Besides the Intel HD integrated graphics, the XPS 15 has the NVIDIA GeForce GT435M or GT420M dedicated video card. The notebook is offered with 6 or 8GB of RAM, up to 640GB 7,200rpm hard drive or up to 256GB solid state drive, and a DVD burner or Blu-ray combo.

Dell’s new 15.6″ XPS has a LED bakclight display with a full HD 1080p resolution or lower 720p.

There are also a built-in JBL 2.1 speaker system with a total 20W output and Waves MaxxAudio technolgy, optionally integrated TV tuner, a 2.0MP web camera, and various networking options including 802.11n, WiMAX, HSPA and EVDO-HSPA mobile broadband, Bluetooth, and Gigabit LAN. The laptop has optional GPS, two USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0/eSATA combo port, a 9-in-1 media card reader, mini DisplayPort and HDMI 1.4 video outputs, and NVIDIA 3DTV Play technology which alows you to “connect your laptop to your 3D-enabled TV and effortlessly project your favorite Blu-ray 3D movies and 3D photo slideshows.”

Regarding design, the notebook has rounded edges, a silver aluminum lid, and black aluminum palmrest.

According to the product specifications the XPS 15 provides a battery life of up to 5 hours and 14 minutes with its standard 6-cell battery or up to 9 hours and 9 minutes with the extended 9-cell unit.

The Dell XPS 15 runs Windows 7 OS and starts at $849.99 at the Dell.com online store.

AT&T has announced the DataConnect Pass Global lineup of international pay-as-you-go data packages for AT&T-certified laptops and netbooks.

According to AT&T, the DataConnect Pass Global passes provide data coverage in more than 100 countries, including Canada, Mexico, countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia and are available in 30-day session increments. The packages include 20MB, 50MB, 100MB, and 200MB of data transfer for $24.99, $59.99, $119.99, and $199.99, respectively.

DataConnect Pass Global packages are available to customers with an AT&T enabled LaptopConnect Card, embedded Laptop Card or netbook that have a domestic AT&T Laptop Connect plan currently. Customers that already have their own AT&T compatible device, but do not currently subscribe to a domestic Laptop Connect Plan, may need to purchase a new SIM card to activate service.

Hewlett-Packard today officially released the HP Slate 500 tablet PC, featuring a 8.9″ multi-touch display, Windows 7 OS, and an Intel Atom processor.

Aimed at business users and professionals, the HP Slate 500 includes the Atom Z540 chip at 1.86GHz and US15W chipset, both designed for use in Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs). It has 2GB of RAM, 64GB of Flash storage, GMA 500 integrated graphics and Broadcom’s acclerator for high-def video decoding.

The multitouch display additionally supports input via an included pen, and has LED backlight and a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels or 1024 x 768 “for some applications,” according to Slate’s datasheet.

There are also a front VGA camera and a 3MP cam on the back of the unit, stereo speakers, microphone, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a single USB port, an SD/SDHC/SDXC media card reader, and a docking connector for the included HP Slate Dock with two USBs and an HDMI port.

With its 2-cell 30WHr battery, the Slate weighs 1.5lbs.

The pre-loaded Windows 7 edition is Professional.

Both business users and consumers can purchase the HP Slate 500 (XT962UA) for $799 via the company’s website.

Asustek has introduced the 1080p playback-capable Asus Eee PC 1015PN netbook, featuring the latest Nvidia ION 512MB DDR3 dedicated graphics, Optimus GPU switching technology, and the Intel Atom N550 dual core processor.

The high-end Eee PC 1015PN netbook has a 10.1-inch LED-backlight display with a resolution of 1024×600 and matte finish, 1GB of DDR3 memory, a 250GB hard drive, a battery life of “up to 9.5 hours”, and Windows 7 Starter OS.

Asustek’s full HD netbook also has an HDMI output port, support for 7.1 channel surround sound, a 0.3MP web camera, a chiclet-style keyboard, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

It weighs 2.76 pounds and is available in black (1015PN-PU17-BK), blue (1015PN-PU17-BU), and red (1015PN-PU17-RD) color.

The Asus Eee PC 1015PN can be purchased now for $429.99 via Amazon and B&H.

Walmart has announced it is now selling the HP Garden Dreams Pavilion dv5-2129wm Special Edition 14.5″ laptop, featuring a spring look with a floral exterior design done in watercolor touches.

Sold as Walmart’s execlusive, the Garden Dreams Pavilion dv5-2129wm is based on the AMD Turion II P540 processor and comes with ATI Radeon HD 4250 integrated graphics, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, DVD burner, and Windows 7 Home Premium OS.

The stylish notebook also has a web cam, 802.11n Wi-Fi, three USB ports, an HDMI output, and a 5-in-1 media card reader.

The dv5-2129wm is priced at $598 (Walmart).

MSI has announced the FR600 3D multimedia notebook with 3D graphics technology and THX TruStudio Pro surround sound with 4-channel speakers.

The 15.6” FR600 3D includes LED-backlight 3D display, the Intel Core i5 Processor, integrated Intel HD graphics, up to 8GB of RAM, up to 640GB hard drive, DVD burner, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and HDMI.

MSI’s 3D laptop runs Windows 7 Home Premium OS.

There’s no word on pricing and availability.

The recently announced Archos 70 tablet with a 7-inch display and Android OS is now available for purchase.

The Archos 70 runs Android 2.2 (Froyo) with access to AppsLib store offering free and paid apps, and features the ARM Cortex A8 1GHz processor and 3D OpenGL ES 2.0-compatible graphics for 3D gaming on the tablet. The device supports 720p HD video playback and also has a front-facing VGA web camera, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 8GB of Flash storage. Archos is also expected to release a version with a 250GB hard drive.

The 7″ screen on the Archos 70 is capacitive multi-touch with a resolution of 800×480 pixels.

There are also stereo speakers, a mic, G-sensor, HDMI output, USB 2.0 and USB Host ports, and a Micro SD card reader.

According to Archos, the tablet’s battery provides up to 10 hours of web surfing on a single charge or 7 hours of video playback, while music playback will drain the battery after 36 hours.

The Archos 70 has an overmoulded stainless steel structure and is 0.43-inch thin. The Flash model weighs 0.69 pounds.

The tablet is priced at $274 on the Archos website.

Asustek has officially released the recently leaked ASUS-Lamborghini Eee PC VX6 12.1-inch ultraportable notebook, featuring a dual-core Atom CPU, switchable graphics, and a look co-designed by car maker Lamborghini.

The VX6 comes with the Intel Atom D525 1.83GHz dual-core CPU, aimed at use in small form factor desktop PCs, as well as with Nvidia Optimus switchable GPU technology that combines the Nvidia ION 2 dedicated GPU for more 3D gaming power and Intel’s integrated graphics for a longer battery life. The laptop also supports full HD 1080p video playback on an external display via HDMI and includes Bang & Olufsen Icepower for a rich audio experience.

The display has a 720p resolution.

Asustek’s stylish ultraportable has a black or white glossy exterior also features USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 3.0 technologies, and the Express Gate instant-on OS besides Windows 7 Home Premium.

The ASUS-Lamborghini Eee PC VX6 is available in the UK for £499, which is around $800 USD. There’s no word on availability in other countries.

The OLPC XO-3 tablet for children in developing nations will debut in February next year, chairman of One Laptop Per Child foundation Nicholas Negroponte said in an interview with IDG.

The February release is about 45 later than originally planed. The XO-3 won’t be initially branded OLPC, but as a product by chip maker Marvell, with the actual XO-3 to follow.

The tablet is expected to cost $75 and to be rugged with a screen made of “maybe glasss or some flavor of glass”.

The eMachines eME442-V133 15.6″ laptop for $279.99 is Best Buy’s response to the $288.00 Compaq CQ6-109WM announced by Walmart.

The budget eMachines eME442-V133 features the AMD V series V140 2.3GHz processor, ATI Radeon HD 4250 integrated graphics, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, a DVD burner, and Windows 7 Home Premium OS.

The display resolution is 1366 x 768 pixels, while other specifications of the 6.4-pound eME442-V133 include a 4-cell battery, wireless N, Gigabit LAN, HDMI and VGA outputs, three USB ports, and SD/MMC media card reader.

Best Buy will sell the notebook at the discounted price on Friday 11/05 and Saturday 11/06 in stores.

The Dell Alienware M15x 15.6″ gaming laptop is now available in select European and Asian countries with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M video card.

Besides the GTX 460M with 1.5GB of video memory, the Intel Core i3/i5/i7-powered M15x is available with the old GeForce GTX 260M, GT 240M, ATI Radeon HD 5730, and HD 5850.

According to Dell UK, the 460M option is £205 ($330) more expensive than the basic GT 240M.

The Alienware M15x in the US is still shipping with old GPUs only.

LG X170 Netbook Launched

LG has launched the X170 10.1-inch netbook, featuring optional Intel Atom dual-core processor and 720p display.

The LG X170 comes with the Atom N455 single-core or N550 dual-core chip, 1366 x 768 (720p) or 1024 x 600 screen, 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, the GMA 3150 integrated graphics, a 6-cell battery, and Bluetooth 3.0.

LG’s new netbook has an exterior with rounded edges and comes in pink, blue, black, or ivory color.

There’s also the new LG SmartPOP technology that allows access to your cell phone from the netbook – to dial in, to receive calls, send receive SMS, transfer files, and sync data.

It starts at around $565 in Korea and there’s no word on availability and pricing in other countries.

Lenovo is going to release the IdeaPad U260 ultraportable laptop, featuring a 12.5-inch display and Intel’s ultra-low voltage processors, according to leaked info.

The IdeaPad U260 weighs 3.04 pounds and is 0.71-inch thick. It will reportedly ship with the Core i3 or i5 ULV CPUs, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and a 4-cell battery for “4 hours of runtime”. The unusually sized 12.5″ screen has a 720p resolution and anti-glare coating.

There are also HDMI and VGA outputs, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The U260 has a case made of magnesium-aluminum alloy and will be available in brown and organge colors.

There’s no word on pricing and availability date at the time of this writing.

The Dell Inspiron iM501R (M501R) 15.6-inch mainstream AMD-based laptop is now available, including a model with a quad-core CPU.

There are two configurations offered by Amazon – the Dell Inspiron iM501R-1459MRB and iM501R-2272MRB. The iM501R-1459MRB features the AMD Athlon II Dual-Core P320 2.1GHz processor and integrated graphics, while the iM501R-2272MRB includes the AMD Phenom II Quad-Core P920 1.6GHz CPU and ATI Radeon HD550v 1GB dedicated video card. Both Inspiron R series laptops have 4GB of DDR3 memory, 500GB of hard disk space, a DVD burner, and a 1366×768 display resolution.

Dell’s iM501R also includes a 1.3MP web camera, Wi-Fi, Ethernet LAN, Bluetooth in iM501R-2272MRB, three USB ports, an eSATA/USB combo port, a 7-in-1 media card reader, and HDMI and VGA outputs.

The notebooks start at 5.76 pounds with the standard 6-cell battery and run Windows 7 Home Premium OS.

The Dell Inspiron iM501R-1459MRB and iM501R-2272MRB are priced at $579.99 and $763.22, respectively.

Slate 500 Tablet Surfaces on HP Website

Hewlett-Packard is going to release the HP Slate 500 Windows 7-based tablet device, according to leaked info on the company’s website.

The Slate 500 (XB830PA – HP Slate 500-1002tu PC) has a 8.9-inch touchscreen display with pen input support and runs Windows 7 Home Premium OS. There are also two (video and still) cameras.

Previous reports say the HP Slate will feature the Intel Atom Z530 processor, 32GB or 64GB of storage space, and support for 1080p video playback.

It will reportedly cost around $550.

HP is also expected to unveil a similar tablet with WebOS operating system, made by recently acquired Palm.

The MSI FX600, a 15.6-inch notebook that belongs to the company’s new entertainment-oriented F Series, is now available.

Newegg offers two FX600 models – the MSI FX600-002US with the Intel Core i5 450M processor and a DVD writer and MSI FX600-003US with Core i3 350M CPU and a Blu-ray combo drive. Both configurations feature the Nvidia GeForce GT325M 1GB dedicated graphics, 4GB of DDR3 memory, and 500GB of hard disk space. The product page of the FX600-002US says the laptop includes NVIDIA Optimus switchable graphics and THX Surround Sound technology. It is not clear if these features are available in the FX600-003US.

The notebooks’ 15.6″ display has a resolution of 1366×768 pixels.

MSI FX600 has a 720p HD web camera, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet LAN, three USB ports, an eSATA/USB combo port, 4-in-1 card reader, ExpressCard slot, and HDMI and VGA outputs.

The 5.28-pound laptops include a 6-cell battery which provides up to 3 hours of work time and run Windows 7 Home Premium OS.

Both models are priced at $799.99.

The Dell Streak 5-inch Android OS-based tablet device will be “available for purchase in late July” in the US, according to the product page on the computer maker’s website.

Besides the 800×480-pixel multi-touch LCD covered with damage-resistant Gorilla glass, the half-pound Dell Streak includes GSM/EDGE, UMTS, and HSDPA / HSUPA connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon (QSD) 8250 processor, a microSD memory card slot for storing users’ data, 512 MB ROM + 512 MB SDRAM + 2 GB non-user accessible MicroSD for system and applications files, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a VGA front-facing camera, and a user-removable battery.

The 6″ wide, 3.1″ high, and 0.4″ thin tablet provides 3G phone functionality with support for SMS and MMS, as well as web browsing, e-mail, instant messaging, A-GPS navigation and e-compass, H.263 / H.264, .3GP, MPEG4, and WMV video support, and other features enabled by Google Android multitasking-capable OS.

The US pricing has not been published yet. In the UK, the Streak starts at £449 ($684) and is expected to have a base price of $500 in the US.

The display of the Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.

The affordable 6.6-pound laptop also sports 802.11n wireless, Ethernet LAN, a 56k modem, Altec Lansing speakers, and three USB ports.

Another sub-$300 15.6″ laptop offering this back-to-school season is the AMD-based Acer Aspire AS5251-1513, sold by Walmart for $298.
