Asustek announced yesterday the 14-inch ASUS N81Vg, the world’s first notebook to feature the new NVIDIA GeForce GT 120M graphics processing unit.

Along with the HD-capable 120M with 32 processor cores, DirectX 10 support and NVIDIA CUDA technology, the ASUS N81Vg features the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, up to 500GB HDD space, and a DVD burner or Blu-ray combo drive and a 1.3MP web camera. The display is glare type and uses LED backlight.

According to the press release, the entertainment laptop has a battery life of up to 3 hours in Performance mode and up to 4 hours in Battery Conservation mode. Its 3DMark 2006 score is 5,431 points.

The N81Vg runs Windows Vista operating system.

asus-android-netbook

PC maker Asustek develops a netbook which will run Google’s Android open source operating system, business publication Bloomberg reports.

Asustek’s main man for Eee PC netbooks Samson Hu said in an interview that a team of engineers had been assigned to develop the Android-based netbook project. However, he pointed out that the company had not yet made a decision on whether it would proceed to market with the results of the experiment.

Android is an operating system used in mobile devices. It’s based on a Linux kernel, developed by Google and later the Open Handset Alliance.

Lenovo Pass Touch Test

Lenovo has announced that its eight ThinkPad laptops passed the “Tough Test”, meeting Military Specifications for semi-rugged computing.

“The ThinkPad X200, X301, X200s, X200 Tablet, T400, T500, R400 and SL300 laptops meet a barrage of military specifications tests and are enhanced with uniquely-designed durability features such as an airbag-like protection system and a roll cage in select models,” the company says.

These laptops met tests for low pressure, humidity, vibration, high and low temperatures, temperature shock, and dust.

Lenovo has also added a new optional 680-nit high brightness display to its the ThinkPad T400 14.1-inch laptop. The panel for outdoors use features LED backlight and is “nearly four times brighter than previous ThinkPad laptop screens”.

Asustek’s new entertainment laptop PC – the 18.4-inch ASUS W90 – is now available in the United States.

The first offered model is the ASUS W90Vp-X1. Along with the 1920 x 1200 widescreen display, the desktop replacement notebook features the Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 processor at 2.80GHz, the high-end ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 1GB dual video card for gaming, three SO-DIMM slots populated with 6GB of DDR2 memory, a 320GB 7,200rpm hard drive, and a DVD burner. The W90 is based on the Intel X38 chipset, designed for use in desktop PCs.

The system also includes built-in 5.1 channel Altec Lancing speakers, Dolby Home Theater technology, a 2MP web camera, 802.11/b/g/n Wireless LAN, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth, and a 56k modem, as well as HDMI and VGA outputs, four USB ports, an ExpressCard slot, eSATA and Firewire ports, and an 8-in-1 media card reader.

The W90Vp-X1, which comes with a 12-cell battery, weighs around 11.5 pounds.

It runs Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit OS and costs $2,199.99 at NewEgg.

Asustek earlier said the W90 is equipped with the Turbo Gear function, which allows users to overclock the machine by “up to 25%”. The computer maker also plans to launch W90 models with a 17-inch display.

Nvidia GeForce GTX280M

Nvidia announced today the GeForce GTX 280M and 260M GPUs for enthusiast laptops, as well as the GeForce GTS 160M and 150M GPUs for high-performance, sleek notebooks.

“GeForce GTX 200M and GeForce GTS 100M Series GPUs make playing the latest HD games on a portable platform a reality by delivering blistering frame rates that are up to 50% faster than the previous generation products they are replacing, all without increasing overall power consumption. Using NVIDIA SLI technology, which enables close to double the graphics performance over a single GPU, two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M GPUs can be paired to offer the fastest notebook graphics solution available today,” Nvidia’s press release says.

GeForce GTS 160M

The new chips support NVIDIA HybridPower swithcable dedicated/integrated GPU technology and NVIDIA CUDA computing architecture.

ASUS, Clevo and MSI are all showing notebooks based on the new GeForce GTX 200M and GeForce GTS 100M Series GPUs at the ongoing 2009 CeBit Show in Hannover, Germany.

AMD today unveiled the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4860 and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830, the world’s first graphics processors based on 40nm technology that enables higher energy efficiency.

The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4860 and 4830 feature 3D engines derived from the ATI Radeon HD 4800 desktop GPU series with support for DirectX 10.1. In addition, the Mobility Radeon HD 4860 supports GDDR5 memory with “nearly twice” the memory bandwidth of GDDR3.

The new mobile graphics cards include the second generation AMD Unified Video Decoder (UVD) chips for full 1080p HD video playback, and advanced power-saving ATI technologies: PowerPlay, PowerXpress, and Switchable Graphics.

The first notebooks with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4860 and 4830 are expected to hit the market in Q2 2009.

Intel CULV CPU

Consumer Ultra Low Voltage CPU

Intel released its Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processors, desinged for use in ultraportable notebooks, according to announcements in April.

MSI has released the x340 ultra-slim laptop with the Intel CULV Core 2 Solo SU3500 CPU in April. The chip is clocked at 1.4GHz and has 3MB of L2 cache.

In May, MSI offered the X340 with two additional CULV processor options: the 1.3GHz Core 2 Solo SU2700 (2 MB L2 Cache) and the Core 2 Solo SU9600 (clock speed unknown).

DigiTimes earlier reported that the CULV platform, Intel’s response to the AMD Yukon, will be used in ultraportables priced between US$699-899.

The higher-end 15-inch MacBook Pro model now comes standard with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz processor, which is an upgrade from 2.53GHz, Apple Insider reports.

The 2.66GHz MacBook Pro MC026LL/A, priced at $2,499, can be additionally upgraded to 2.93GHz for $300. The 2.93GHz option replaces the previous 2.8GHz upgrade.

The standard lower-end 2.4GHz MacBook Pro MB470LL/A remained unchanged. It’s priced at $1,999.

Apple Insider also revealed that the 15 MacBook Pro and 13-inch aluminum unibody MacBook can now be configured with a 256GB solid state drive. Previously, the 256GB SSD had been optionally available only in 17-inch MacBook Pro.

“The prices for the 256GB drive upgrades are as follows: 2.0GHz unibody MacBook ($900), 2.4GHz unibody MacBook ($825), 2.4GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro ($825), 2.66GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro ($750), and 17-inch MacBook Pro ($750),” the report says.
